Newhalem Area

Newhalem is the last town encountered as one heads over the pass from the west side.  The town is a piece of Americana, built to house the workers for the hydroelectric projects on the river.  During the winter the town is pretty dead, but in the summer months, the store opens up and people return to the quaint town.  There are a good amount of waterfalls located within a short distance of the town, many of them relatively easy to view.  If you are planning on driving over the pass into Winthrop, this is a great page to find a couple little side trips along the way.
