The three waterfalls on the North Fork of Index Creek occur in rapid
succession and can be viewed fairly easily in a loop hike. This is not
an official trail, and there are a few steepish spots, but it's nothing that
anyone in reasonable shape shouldn't be able to pull off. The overall
hike is a great one with three nice waterfalls and a total distance of
around three miles round trip. It should be noted that the legality of
visiting these three waterfalls is a little up in the air. In order to
reach the trail one must walk across a bridge that says "Private Road and
Property". I was told by a local that it's OK for the public to walk
across and hike the trail but if you see any sign that you shouldn't be
there, turn around.
Anthology Falls is the uppermost of the three waterfalls and occurs where
Index Creek takes a violent plunge over a granitic cliff. The creek
drops 32' in a 30' wide display of whitewater. On my visit, the creek
was running so high and the spray was so intense that it was really
difficult to take pictures (the sunlight wasn't great either). With
better conditions, this is likely a very pretty waterfall. I named all
the waterfalls along Index Creek using synonyms of the word "index".

DIRECTIONS - From Highway 2, turn south onto Index
Creek Road just east of the tiny town of Baring. The road quickly goes
over a weird, wooden bridge. A few hundred feet later is another
bridge over the creek. Park at a pullout shortly before the second
bridge, walk across, and find the trail on the left almost immediately.
Stay left/uphill for 1.6 miles until the road makes a sharp right and
parallels the North Fork. You can hear the falls from here.
Scramble down the steep slope to the falls. |
