SOUTH FORK AREA

I currently know of, or suspect, ten waterfalls in the upper reaches of the South Fork, only three of which I have actually visited thus far.  The river begins in the valley between the Sisters Range and the southern slopes of Mt. Baker.  Several small glaciers on the Sisters as well as melting snow from the ridges around Baker combine to form the river.  Rafting the lower stretches of the South Fork near the town of Acme is a highly popular summer activity, but the upper reaches are rarely visited.  The best waterfall in the area is Bridal Veil Falls, which is accessible via a short, but fairly enjoyable bushwhack.  The only other waterfall that is easy to view is Loomis Falls, which drops right next to the road.  The road used to access these waterfalls is gated each year from November through June each year to protect elk habitat.  Click on the red-named waterfalls to get more information about them.
