This very nice waterfall is located near the Colonial Creek Campground, but there is no trail to visit the falls. Instead a short trip up the creek bed is required. Those who make the trek will discover Rhode Creek plunging a little over 100' in a straight drop. The canyon near the falls gets very narrow. This means that you will probably need to get your feet wet to view the falls. This isn't a huge deal to most of us, but some people hate getting wetting shoes so you've been warned. The water is a little difficult to photograph thanks to the way the creek drops over the cliff. In addition, you will have to shoot straight up so any rain will cover your lens. On my first trip it was pretty wet so my pictures are a little disappointing. This gives me a good excuse to make a return trip in the spring so I don't mind. |
DIRECTIONS - Take HWY 20 east from the tiny town of Newhalem to the Colonial
Creek Campground. Find the creek bed right at the intersection of
Highway 20 and the road heading into the campground. Rockhop upstream
for about 1/2 a mile to the falls. You will need to climb about 600'
vertically in the process. NEARBY WATERFALLS - Colonial Creek Falls |
